My mother spent a year finding the best Challah recipe. Every week she would try a new recipe, and the family would rate the Challah. By the end of the year, she created the ultimate Challah. It doesn't get better than this!

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons yeast
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1⁄2 cup sugar
  • 1⁄2 tablespoon salt
  • 2 eggs, plus one egg yolk
  • 1⁄4 cup oil
  • 3 drops vanilla extract
  • 7 cups flour

Instructions

Place 1 cup warm water, yeast and 1/2 teaspoon sugar in mixing bowl and let rise for 10 minutes. Add 1/2 cup sugar, salt, 2 eggs, oil, vanilla, flour and 1 cup warm water. Fit mixing bowl with electric kneader and knead for 3 minutes.

Let dough rise until doubled (about 1 1/2 hours).

Shape dough into 3 Challahs and place in greased baking pans. Brush the top of each Challah with egg yolk for shine. Let Challah rise for 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 350. Bake Challahs for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes, then remove from pans to cool completely.
